Discipleship at Scale: Why You Can’t 10X Without Making Disciples First
Nov 04, 2024
In the pursuit of multiplying churches by 10X, there’s one principle that can’t be ignored—discipleship. No amount of strategic planning, marketing, or leadership development can replace the foundational act of making disciples. Church multiplication is simply the byproduct of effective disciple-making.
Jesus' Multiplication Model
When we look at how Jesus expanded His influence, it becomes clear that discipleship was His primary strategy for growth. Jesus didn’t start with massive crowds or elaborate systems; He started with twelve men.
Mark 3:14 says,
"He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach."
Jesus spent time with His disciples, teaching them not just through words, but through daily life and personal example. By investing deeply in a few, Jesus created the conditions for multiplication. His disciples carried forward His mission, ultimately sparking the global church movement.
Why Discipleship is Essential for 10X Growth
Discipleship creates leaders who are equipped to disciple others, forming an unbroken chain of multiplication. Programs can add people to the church, but discipleship multiplies the mission.
Consider Paul’s instruction to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2:
"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."
Paul understood that for the Gospel to spread exponentially, discipleship needed to be passed down through generations of leaders. This isn’t addition; it’s exponential growth.
The Key to Sustainable Multiplication
Churches that focus on making disciples develop a leadership pipeline that sustains long-term growth. Without discipleship, churches may grow for a season but eventually plateau.
Here’s why:
- Discipleship Develops Leaders
Healthy discipleship produces leaders who embody the values and mission of the church. These leaders are equipped to plant new churches, lead ministries, and replicate the process in others. - Discipleship Fuels Community Growth
Small groups, one-on-one mentorship, and shared life experiences forge deep community bonds. These relationships provide the foundation for reproducing healthy church environments. - Discipleship Builds Resilience
Churches grounded in strong discipleship practices are more adaptable and resilient. When challenges arise, these churches have a core of spiritually mature leaders ready to navigate obstacles.
Practical Steps to Prioritize Discipleship
- Simplify the Focus
Make disciple-making the primary goal of every ministry. From kids' ministry to small groups, ensure that personal growth and spiritual development are at the center. - Develop a Clear Pathway
Create a discipleship pathway that helps people grow from new believers to mature leaders. This could include small groups, mentorship programs, and leadership development tracks. - Empower Leaders to Disciple
Discipleship shouldn’t fall solely on the pastor. Equip leaders at every level to disciple those around them. Multiplication happens when every person sees themselves as a disciple-maker. - Model Discipleship
Church leaders must personally engage in discipleship. People follow what they see modeled. By being actively involved in discipling others, leaders set the tone for the entire church.
The Future of 10X Churches
10X growth doesn’t come from flashy programs or short-term initiatives. It comes from a deep, unwavering commitment to making disciples. When discipleship becomes the core of your church’s DNA, multiplication follows naturally.
The question isn’t whether your church can multiply. The question is whether your church is ready to prioritize making disciples.
Are you ready to grow by 10X through the power of discipleship?
