Harold Hayes & Joe Boyd on the 10X Churches Strategy
Oct 07, 2024
Harold Hayes, a church planter preparing to start a multiplying church, is having a video call with his coach, Joe Boyd, the Lead Pastor of Grace Fellowship, a church known for planting multiplying churches.
Harold Hayes:
Hey Joe, thanks so much for taking the time to chat today. I’ve been really intrigued by the 10X Churches strategy you’ve been talking about. I’d love to know more about where that idea came from. Was it something born out of prayer?
Joe Boyd:
Absolutely, Harold. The 10X strategy was very much birthed out of prayer. It started when I realized that God was calling us to think beyond addition and even multiplication. You know, I spent time asking, ‘What if God wants us to dream much bigger?’ The 10X vision came out of asking Him to reveal His heart for expanding His Kingdom. We’re not called to simply grow by small increments; God can and will do exponentially more when we seek Him and walk in faith. It’s all about trusting His provision and His timing.
Harold Hayes:
That’s amazing! So, I’m curious—where do you see this 10X idea in the Bible? How did that concept come to you through scripture?
Joe Boyd:
Great question! The 10X idea really comes from Jesus’ own example. Think about it: Jesus started with 12 disciples. At the end of His ministry, in the upper room, there were 120 believers gathered. That’s a 10X increase! The pattern is there in scripture—Jesus invested deeply in a small group, but it didn’t stop there. Through multiplication, His ministry scaled far beyond that small group of 12. And the exciting thing is, He didn’t just say, 'Now, go add a few more people.' He set the stage for exponential growth. That same principle drives the 10X strategy—how can we replicate what Jesus modeled to multiply disciples and churches?
Harold Hayes:
I love that perspective. And I’ve been thinking about how this 10X approach requires a shift in mindset. Why do you say it takes more faith to think 10X than 2X? That really stood out to me when I first heard it.
Joe Boyd:
Exactly! Here’s the thing, Harold—2X thinking is about what I can do, what we can do, on our own strength. It’s about adding just a bit more effort, a bit more time, a bit more resources. It feels doable, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it doesn’t push us into radical faith. 10X, on the other hand, points out that we *can’t* do it without God. It forces us to depend on Him. A 10X vision is impossible without divine intervention, and that’s why it takes greater faith. It stretches us to think differently, to pray differently, and to rely on others who God brings into the mission. It’s not just bigger dreams; it’s a faith multiplier.
Harold Hayes:
That makes so much sense. It’s not just a strategy—it’s a call to lean into God’s power. That reminds me of something you mentioned before: your church back in Kansas. How many churches did you guys start there?
Joe Boyd:
Yeah, back when I was pastoring in Kansas, our church planted 10 churches in 10 years. And let me tell you, that was a 10X vision in action. It wasn’t easy, and there were moments when we weren’t sure how it would all come together, but God was faithful. What we saw was that every time we sent people out, every time we took the risk of planting, God multiplied the work. It was a true example of how, when we think 10X and trust God for the results, He exceeds what we can imagine.
Harold Hayes:
Wow, that’s incredible. Hearing this really encourages me as I’m getting ready to launch our multiplying church. It’s all about thinking bigger, trusting more, and watching God do what only He can do. Thanks for your time, Joe, and for the insights. I feel more equipped to take this next step.
Joe Boyd:
You’ve got it, Harold. Keep pressing into God and trusting Him with the 10X vision. You’re not in this alone, and He’s going to multiply your efforts in ways you can’t even imagine. Let’s keep the conversation going as you move forward!
