Why Multiply by 10X? Is It Biblical?

Oct 07, 2024

When we talk about multiplying churches by 10X, it can sound ambitious—maybe even excessive. But is it Biblical? Does God actually call us to this level of growth and expansion? The short answer is yes. Exponential growth isn’t just a business strategy; it’s the heartbeat of the Kingdom of God. Let’s unpack why.

The Biblical Mandate for Multiplication

From Genesis to Revelation, God consistently shows a desire for His people to grow, expand, and fill the earth. The very first command He gives humanity in Genesis 1:28 is to “be fruitful and multiply.” This wasn’t just about biological reproduction—it was about spreading His image, His rule, and His presence throughout the world.

Fast forward to Jesus, and we see this same principle echoed in the Great Commission:

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..." (Matthew 28:19)

Jesus didn’t command addition. He didn’t say to gather a few and stop there. His call was to all nations. This is a multiplication mandate, not a maintenance mission.

How Jesus Modeled 10X Growth

Jesus multiplied His influence by investing in a few who would reach the many. He discipled twelve men, three of whom He invested in more deeply. By the time the book of Acts opens, His followers have multiplied exponentially.

In Acts 2, the church grows from 120 to over 3,000 in a single day. By Acts 6, the number of disciples is multiplying rapidly (Acts 6:7). The early church didn’t grow by addition; it grew by multiplication, spreading from city to city, nation to nation, without centralized control.

Why 10X and Not 2X?

A common misconception is that slow, incremental growth is the only sustainable way to lead a church. But the early church proves otherwise. Multiplication happens rapidly when disciples make disciples who make disciples.

The problem with 2X thinking is that it often reflects a scarcity mindset. It suggests that we should only plant churches when we feel fully resourced or when conditions are perfect. But Jesus sent His disciples out with minimal resources, teaching them to rely on God’s provision and the power of the Holy Spirit.

10X thinking reflects the reality that:

  • The harvest is plentiful (Luke 10:2).
  • God desires that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9).
  • The power of the Holy Spirit can do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20).

The Practical Side of 10X Multiplication

10X growth doesn’t mean planting 10 churches overnight. It means developing a mindset that continually asks, how can we raise up leaders and send them out?

It looks like:

  • Raising leaders who plant new churches, who then raise more leaders.
  • Empowering small groups that multiply into more groups.
  • Creating a sending culture where success is measured by how many people are sent, not just how many people gather.

The Heart of the Matter

At its core, multiplying by 10X is about obedience. It’s about trusting that God’s desire for the church is far greater than we often allow ourselves to imagine. Jesus didn’t start a church to gather a few; He started a movement to transform the world.

So yes, 10X multiplication is Biblical. The question isn’t whether we’re called to multiply. The question is whether we’re willing to embrace the faith required to step into that calling.
